Mindhunter Theme

Skills Applied: ProTools, Audacity, Recording

I started watching Mindhunter when it came out in 2017, enamored by the intricacies of the human mind. I wanted the theme song to replicate these intricacies and attention to detail that the characters had. Recently having seen the movie American Psycho I was fascinated with the idea of Serial Killers’ taste in music. I knew I wanted the track to be in F minor, inherently menacing to me, dissonant, and contain some relation to a “serial killer song”. I also felt an instrumental track wouldn’t do the introduction justice. After doing some research on John Wayne Gacy, the killer at the focal point of the series, I found out he enjoyed REO Speedwagon and specifically “Take it on the Run”. So, I recorded a series of whisper vocals of this line and manipulated it into the piece.

Dark Theme

Skills Applied: Granular Synthesis, Reverb, ProTools, Sound Design.

For this project I wanted to encapsulate the swirling anxiety present in the show Dark. I experimented with the timbres of the instruments and where they would fit in the soundscape, carefully sculpting their placement in the stereo image. I used a granular synthesis plugin to manipulate the space and texture of the sounds I was working with. I also pulled a handful of samples from the BBC Sound Library into Spear for spectral re-synthesis to manipulate the movements into the sound I wanted. Then I brought all these sounds back into Protools and worked on Echo, Reverb, and mixing.
